When it’s raining out, we always have customers ask if their HVAC unit outside is going to be okay. The truth is… absolutely! You don’t have to worry when it’s raining because it will not cause any significant damage. Since the outside unit is exposed to the elements, it is specially designed to withstand rain, wind, hail and snowstorms.
The only time it is really at risk is in the event of a flood, as your unit will not be able to withstand submersion in water. However, these are extreme circumstances, and for ordinary every-day use, you’ll find it does not need to be protected from rainfall. In fact, over protecting your unit could actually lead to more damage than if you were to leave your compressor unit completely unprotected. Methods that prevent air from circulating in order to dry the internal components of your unit will likely cause it to rust.
And when it’s warmer out, It is perfectly safe to use your air conditioner when it is raining outside – in fact, doing so will help to dry out the humid air in your home, making it more comfortable indoors with no risk at all to your A/C system.
Unless there is an issue with your A/C unit, it should work in all conditions. If you have any questions or concerns, always feel free to give us a call – your comfort is ALWAYS our first priority!!!
