We expect cold temperatures during the winter, but when highs drop to the single digits or below zero, it can be more difficult to keep your home warm.
Here are 5 tips for keeping the heat in and the cold out:
1. Lower The Thermostat Setting
When temperatures drop below zero or even below freezing for extended periods of time, sometimes your heating system cannot keep up. If your home is not heating up to the temperature you’ve set, try lowering it a few degrees. The temperature of the air coming out of your vents doesn’t get warmer by turning up your thermostat. Similarly, cranking your heat will not heat your home faster. You are better off choosing a temperature that your HVAC system can realistically reach even if lower than you normally prefer.
2. Keep Your Thermostat At A Constant Temperature
Once you’ve found a temperature your system can reach, keep your thermostat set and override preset set backs. Normally, setting your thermostat to a lower temperature while you are away from your home can help lower energy costs. But in extremely cold conditions, this only makes your system work harder and cycle longer to raise the temperature later.
3. Clean Or Change The System Filter
A clogged air filter can decrease efficiency and lead to restricted air flow. If left for long periods of time, a dirty filter can cause wear and tear that leads to premature unit failure.
4. Block Drafts & Close Unused Vents
Seal window and door gaps to block drafts of cold air. You can try an insulation kit, heavy drapes, or even weather stripping and caulking to stop any leaks in your windows. For exterior doors, try a air-stopping door snake or limit entry and exit to doors that don’t open directly to the house, such as a mudroom or garage. Finally, close vents and doors to unused rooms like sunrooms and spare bedrooms to encourage airflow to inhabited parts of the house.
5. Schedule A Heating System Maintenance
Scheduling an annual heating system maintenance can help avoid future issues. Our expert technicians can help your unit run more efficiently and diagnose potential problems before they arise.
