We just wrapped up the 25th Annual Spring Home Show this past weekend and we loved getting to see everyone!

During our time at the show, we had the opportunity to talk to so many people and we wanted to take the time to provide some answers to our most frequently asked questions:

Q: What is the difference between central air conditioning and ductless
ACentral air conditioning uses ducts to deliver the air equally to each room of your home. If you already have forced hot air installed, central air conditioning can use the same ducts, or new ducts can be added just for the purpose of delivering the chilled air. Ductless systems, also known as a mini-split system, install right into the walls of your home. They do not use ducts, which makes them less expensive to install in homes that do not already have ductwork, and are more energy efficient because they do not lose energy as the air travels, like the way central air conditioners do. You can use them to cool all or specific parts of your home, for areas that may need additional cooling, in a new addition or sunroom, or even a garage. All of the inside units are independently controlled so you can have ones off that you aren’t using, or even have all of your inside units set to different temperatures. It’s totally up to you!

Q: How many units inside can you run off of one ductless outside condenser?
A: It really depends on the brand, system size, etc. For example, a Carrier ductless system can typically run up to 5 inside units off of one outside condenser.

Q: Why do I need to get maintenance done on my system?
A: Total Mechanical Systems recommends that you have your HVAC systems serviced 2 times a year. Small problems can be found, diagnosed and fixed before they turn in to bigger issues and/or you lose the cooling or heating in your home. This will also help to extend the life and efficiency of your unit(s).

Q: What is the average lifespan of an HVAC system?
A: The average lifespan for an HVAC system, including ductless systems, is 15-20 years. The average furnace lifespan is 15 years. The average lifespan of a boiler is between 10 and 15 years. This is all based upon the fact that the system is adequately maintained and taken care of, just like you would a car.

Q: How much does one of these ductless systems cost?
A: There are so many varying factors that go in to putting together a cost for a ductless system, or any HVAC system for that matter. We always want to send out a Comfort Consultant to have the chance to look at your home and your current system, to be able to answer any and all questions you have, and to be able to provide you a free quote right then and there after being able to see firsthand the environment and system needs for you, your family, and your home.

Q: What are my options for financing?
A: Total Mechanical Systems offers many options for financing including 0% for 18 months (upon approval). We will always work with you to get you any financing needed.
