We celebrate Earth Day each year, but saving energy and money is something we can and should do every day. “One of the biggest energy users in your home is your HVAC system,” according to Energy Star. “As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling.”  We’re sharing some Earth Day HVAC tips that show that by making smart decisions with your HVAC system, you can have a significant effect on monthly utility bills while conserving natural resources.

How to Make Your HVAC System More Sustainable

Adhere to Regular Maintenance

One of the best ways to save energy and money on your HVAC system is by staying on top of regular maintenance. That means scheduling annual maintenance on your air conditioning and heating systems. These check-ups will ensure your systems are operating at their most efficient and that all the parts and components are in good working order. Systems that are working at their optimal efficiencies will use less energy.

Adjust Your Thermostat

Your thermostat, the brains of your HVAC system, is another tool you can use to conserve energy and save money. By setting your thermostat to a cooler temperature in the winter and to a warmer temperature in the summer, when away from home or while you’re asleep at night, can provide significant energy savings. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, “you can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day from its normal setting.”

If you don’t have one already, a programmable thermostat can make saving energy a piece of cake! By setting your thermostat to control temperatures for you, you won’t have to worry about forgetting to adjust temperatures as you come and go from your home. The less your system has to work to keep you comfortable, the more savings you’ll see on your utility bill.

Check Your Filter

One of the easiest ways to ensure your HVAC system runs efficiently is to make sure you check your filter monthly and change when necessary. If you have pets this might require more frequent checks and changes to ensure you don’t have a dirty filter. A dirty filter disrupts the airflow through your system requiring it to work harder, which in turn, increases your utility bills.

Incorporate Window Coverings

Another simple tip to reduce energy consumption is by utilizing your blinds, drapes, and/or curtains. This is a great way to help control the temperature in your home. When it’s cooler out, you can keep them open, letting the sun’s rays heat your home. In the summer, keep your window coverings closed during the day to reduce the radiant effects of the sun.

Decisions that we make daily can have an impact on our environment and our wallet. Even though Earth Day comes around once a year, conserving energy and saving money should always be a year-round goal.

One of the best things you can do to improve energy efficiency in your home is to invest in energy star certified products. Appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, stovetops and microwaves all have various features but none is more important that being energy star certified.

The appliance that uses the most electricity in your home is your HVAC system. Upgrading an older unit to a more advanced and energy efficient unit can do wonders for your electric bill and use electricity more efficiently which helps conservation efforts.
